Pesticides In Your Home

pesticides-2Pesticides in the home are always a concern. As a home inspector I see pesticides all over. Here are a few things to remember:

Human Exposure – Ultimately, there are three ways in which pesticides can enter the human body and we have listed them from most to least dangerous here.

Inhaled – When used in powders, vapors, or airborne droplets, pesticides can be inhaled rather easily and this is dangerous. With low-pressure applications, the hazard is quite limited because the droplets cannot remain in the air when too large or heavy. However, high-pressure applications present a serious danger because the droplets are small. When they’re small, they carry over a significant distance in the wind. When there is a particular danger of inhalation, the product should contain a warning to wear safety equipment.

Swallowed – Secondly, pesticides can be consumed accidentally or eaten if it has been poorly labelled or placed in a container with no label at all. Furthermore, pesticides can be ingested as a result of smoking or even eating near those who have been around the chemical.

Absorbed – Finally, you could also absorb it through the skin if it splashes when mixing. When pesticides splash onto equipment, clothing, or even on the outside of the bottle, they can be absorbed into the skin but this presents very little danger.
